Nat’l Breast Center Foundation Celebrates Success of Virtual Walk to Bust Cancer
Alexandria, VA – The National Breast Center Foundation celebrated a rewarding victory today when it raised more than $125,000 in support of breast cancer testing, research, and treatment, especially for low-income and uninsured women.
On what should have been the foundation’s 5th annual Walk to Bust Cancer, this year’s walk became a month-long virtual event due to the restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The event’s famous Angel Wings is a piece of artwork created by patient Mary Edwards. The original currently hangs in Dr. Weintritt’s office. Two replica sets of the wings appeared around town all through October, Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Walkers and supporters were encouraged to snap a selfie in front of the wings and tag themselves, the business where they were located, and then tag five friends to take the challenge. Not only did this spur interest and awareness here in Alexandria and beyond, but Carucci received daily requests from local businesses to get involved.
NBCF Founder Dr. David Weintritt and Executive Director Martha Carucci thanked their dedicated team of volunteers, many of whom are breast cancer survivors and former and current patients of Weintritt.
As she has every year, Alexandria’s Mindful Junkie, Gina White, led the supporters in a moment of meditation.
In keeping with the virtual theme, the celebratory event featured videos from volunteers, patients, supporters, fans and friends. The theme was clear and constant as they all expressed their support and admiration for the work done by Weintritt and Carucci.
Mary Edwards, a former and hopefully future survivor whose breast cancer has unfortunately returned, found the strength to stand up and, in an especially poignant moment, became overcome with emotion as she expressed her gratitude and appreciation for Dr. Weintritt.
The funds raised will enable increased breast cancer research as well as ensure that more women have access to the testing that’s needed to detect cancer early, which is the key to success.
