West Potomac Girls Tennis Upsets Alexandria City in Historic Win
Victory sends the Wolverines to the state tournament and into the Occoquan Regional championship match.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The West Potomac High School girls’ tennis team pulled off a major upset Thursday, defeating Alexandria City High School 5-4 in a regional semifinal to advance to the Virginia state tournament for the first time since 2008.
The victory also earned the Wolverines a spot in the Occoquan Regional championship match against perennial powerhouse Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.
One of the day’s most anticipated matchups featured two standout freshmen: West Potomac’s Savannah Jenkins and Alexandria City’s Makeda Erstu.
Although Jenkins finished second in the district tournament and Erstu placed third, the two had never faced each other. Earlier this season, an injury sidelined Jenkins and prevented a potential meeting between the rising stars. With all eyes on the singles showdown, Jenkins delivered a commanding performance, defeating Erstu in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

The matchup showcased two of the region’s brightest young players. Erstu recently moved to the United States from Ethiopia, where she began playing tennis before bringing her talents to Alexandria. Jenkins, meanwhile, grew up in the local tennis community and is familiar with many area coaches and players, including Alexandria City coach Arthur Kalil through his work at Hank Harris Tennis Academy.
Jenkins’ victory over Erstu proved pivotal for West Potomac, which relied on strong performances throughout its lineup to remain within striking distance heading into doubles play.
The two teams finished singles play tied 3-3, setting up a dramatic finish in doubles competition.
West Potomac ultimately secured the 5-4 team victory by winning two of the three doubles matches, knocking off an Alexandria City squad that entered the regional tournament as Patriot District champion and the No. 1 seed.

For the Titans, the loss ended a successful season that included a district title and one of the strongest campaigns in recent years. For West Potomac, however, the win represented a long-awaited return to the state stage. The Wolverines’ victory secured the program’s first state tournament berth since 2008, a milestone the team had targeted throughout the season.
The Wolverines now turn their attention to Friday’s Occoquan Regional championship match against Thomas Jefferson.
Thomas Jefferson enters the final as one of the region’s traditional tennis powers. West Potomac, meanwhile, can approach the match knowing it has already achieved its primary goal of qualifying for the state tournament.
Whatever happens against Thomas Jefferson, West Potomac has already accomplished something special. For the first time in 18 years, the Wolverines are headed back to the Virginia state tournament.

Editor’s Note: After publication of this story, West Potomac was defeated by Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in the Occoquan Regional championship match on Friday, May 29. The loss does not affect the Wolverines’ state tournament berth, which they secured with Thursday’s regional semifinal victory over Alexandria City. West Potomac will make its first state tournament appearance since 2008.
