Alexandria, VA – Talk about giving! On Tuesday, June 18, city dignitaries broke ground on Spire, which is the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection’s gift of 113 affordable housing units. The partnership between the city, the church and AHC Affordable Housing has an estimated completion date of 2021.

“I think it will be a Band-Aid on the affordable housing crisis in Alexandria and in the region, but that addition of 113 units is better than nothing. It’s a good start for us, and we have more to build on,” said Alexandria City Councilor Mo Seifeldein. “We know that we’ve lost a good percentage of our affordable housing stock, and we are projected to lose about 1,000 units over the next 10 years, and COG [the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments] says by 2045 we are going to need 115,000 units in the region, and we’re not there just yet. One of their assessments is that the impediment is due to a lack of political will, and we as elected officials have more work to do.”

The church will also build a new, smaller, worship space on the grounds. The apartments will be a mix of efficiencies, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units and rents will range from 40 percent to 60 percent of the area median income.

“This development will provide much-needed affordable living opportunities to working families in the Beauregard community, which is expected to lose hundreds of market affordable apartments in the coming years,” according to AHC Inc.
