Del Ray Dive Pop-Up Brings Nostalgic Bar Culture to Alexandria

Alexandria, VA – The pop-up at Del Ray Pop-Up Bar has reopened as Del Ray Dive, turning 2312 Mt. Vernon Ave. into a lively throwback to dive bars of decades past—only louder, brighter, and a lot more fun.
The concept leans into nostalgia, with a menu and atmosphere built around the kind of nights you might not fully remember—but definitely won’t forget. Guests will find nostalgic cocktails, shot-and-beer combos, and even individual pitchers of American classics, along with dive bar basket food at dive bar prices from the founders of Holy Cow and Pork Barrel BBQ.
The experience is packed with playful touches, including a $4 Beer-O-Matic mystery beer machine, shotskis, Flaming Dr. Peppers, a White Claw claw machine, squirt gun shooters, and even the chance to staple dollar bills to the ceiling.
Owner Bill Blackburn acknowledged the irony of creating a “classic” dive bar covered in memorabilia that just popped up overnight.
“How can you have a dive bar that’s been there for generations, but it’s really only been there for, like, three weeks?” Blackburn told The Washingtonian. “That’s a good question. That’s a fair question. I guess it’ll be a fair critique. But we’ll do our best.”
His original idea, he said, was to channel the old Del Ray—when it was more blue-collar, with “drown your sorrows with a shot and a beer-type bars.”
“But that’s not very fun, right? Nobody wants to go to a dive bar that’s depressing,” Blackburn said. Instead, the goal was to capture the energy of college dive bars and twenty-something hangouts—“because everybody has fond memories of that time in their life, whether you went to college or you didn’t.”
Del Ray Dive is open through August, offering a limited-time chance to relive those carefree nights—or create a few new ones.
