Be Ready! City of Alexandria Recognizes National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, and the City of Alexandria encourages everyone to learn how to prepare for emergencies by being ready, involved and informed.

Make a plan and make sure your family understand what to do.

The purpose of National Preparedness Month, designated annually by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is to raise public awareness about the importance of being prepared for disasters of any kind. The goal of the initiative is to increase the overall number of individuals, families, and communities that engage in preparedness actions.

National Preparedness Month serves as a reminder for everyone to be ready for the unexpected; learn lifesaving skills, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid; and check insurance policies and coverage for hazards like floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes.

In recognition of National Preparedness Month, the community is invited to attend the City’s  free Emergency Preparedness Fair on Friday, September 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Market Square (301 King St.). Attendees will receive emergency preparedness kits; learn more about emergency preparedness; receive training in and practice in Hands-Only CPR; learn about volunteer opportunities in the City of Alexandria, and more. The Emergency Preparedness Fair is presented in partnership with Volunteer Alexandria, the American Red Cross, and the Alexandria Health Department.

This year’s National Preparedness Month theme is: Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How. Build a kit, and make a plan; be informed by signing up for emergency alerts and other information through the free Alexandria eNews service, and create a free, confidential safety profile through the Smart911 service, which lets residents, businesses and visitors provide information to 911 dispatchers in advance of emergencies.

Be ready! Visit the City’s National Preparedness Month webpage for more information.
