ALEXANDRIA, VA-Following George Floyd’s murder on May 25, 2020, the Alexandria Black History Museum (ABHM) requested that Alexandria residents share their thoughts, artwork, and more. ABHM wanted to document the Alexandria community’s response of this tragic event and preserve it for future generations.

An online exhibition featuring the items received so far launched recently on the Historic Alexandria Online portal. The items collectively are called the Black Lives Remembered Collection. In the past year, museum staff have gathered historic pieces including Black Lives Matter masks, signs  t-shirts, and photographs. To view item records, click HERE

The collecting initiative is active. ABHM asks people to contribute their comments and photographs via this online form.

A second exhibition will launch in May, around the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death. A press release reads that it “documents the community response to this pivotal moment in our nation’s history.”
