Alexandria, Va. – Mirror Mirror, the new art installation at Waterfront Park, was unveiled to the public on Friday. The interactive piece is the inaugural project of the city’s Office of the Arts public art series. That means that Mirror Mirror will be on display until November, and a new project will be installed in March 2020 (the artist has been picked but their identity has not been made public.)

“We hope that people enjoy it,” said Michael Szivos, the architect and artist who leads the New York-based SOFTlab, which built the piece. “Through a panoramic array of mirror and sound-responsive lights, we hope Mirror Mirror will visually blend the waterfront, the fabric of Old Town and the activity of pedestrians in the new park.”

Mirror Mirror responds to sound and light by visitors walking through it, and was inspired by the historic Jones Point Lighthouse along the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

The piece will be cleaned “as needed,” according to Diane Ruggiero, deputy director of  recreation, parks and cultural activities for the Office of the Arts.

“We’ve planned to do this for the next 10 years,” Ruggiero said.

The public is invited to the ribbon cutting for Waterfront Park on Saturday, March 31, which will be held from 11 a.m. to noon.
