Alexandria and Arlington to Host Northern Virginia’s Senior Olympics

Registration Now through Aug. 24

The Northern Virginia Senior Olympics includes more than 60 events that exercise the mind as well as the body. To qualify participants must turn 50-years-old no later than Dec. 31, 2018. The deadline for online registration at www.nvso.us is Aug. 24. Paper registrations, available at most city and county recreation and senior centers, must be postmarked no later than Aug. 20.

The games commence Saturday, Sept. 15 and conclude Sept. 26.

What and Where

The Bowl America Shirley on Edsall Road will again be home to the NVSO’s 10-pin bowling competition. The Hollin Hall Senior Center is hosting Bunco; the Dominoes-Mexican train games will be at Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads. Cribbage, eight-ball and nine-ball pool will be played at the Lincolnia Senior Center near Landmark.

Arlington is hosting the NVSO’s opening ceremony and track meet Sept. 15.

NVSO diving will occur at Yorktown High and some of the NVSO pickleball matches will unfold at The Thomas Jefferson Community Center, also in Arlington.

This year the NVSO is adding three new events to its roster : canasta at The Jefferson in Arlington; croquet at the Walter Reed Community Center in Arlington: and beach ball wallyball at the Providence RECenter in Falls Church. Due to popular demand, the NVSO is bringing back its twilight 5K road race at South Lakes High School in Reston, Saturday, Sept. 22.

How It Started

The NVSO began in 1982 with about 80 persons competing. In 2017 nearly 800 Northern Virginians took part, making it one of the largest annual senior events in the region.

Fees

The NVSO’s basic registration fee is $13. A fee of $2 is added for each event entered. Some events require additional fees including bowling, cycling, golf and orienteering. There is no onsite or day-of registration.
