If you ask Mary Lee Anderson, Director of Senior Services in Alexandria, what the best deal in town is, she will quickly tell you it is the “Alexandria Silver Service Card.”
The program is just about two years
old, and already has success, but as Anderson points out, “not enough people
know about it – seniors or businesses.”
The program is easy. If you are a senior (over 60) that lives or works in Alexandria, you qualify for a card. And if you are a business and want to offer special deals to seniors, you are eligible to participate.
Businesses all over town have already signed up. Nature’s Nibbles, a pet food store on Mount Vernon Avenue, for example, offers a straight 15% discount for in-store and delivery—no special days or hours, or standing on your head while chewing gum. Pork Barrel BBQ in Del Ray will give you a free fountain drink with a sandwich on weekdays before 5 pm. Hysteria in Old Town offers 20% off purchases, any day of the week. Hairy Situations takes 15% off any grooming package Tuesday through Friday. (For a complete list of current participants, see the sidebar below)
