Stay Inside! National Weather Service Issues Heat Advisory in Alexandria

"The combination of high temperatures and high humidity will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible," notes the advisory.

Alexandria, VA – Stay indoors, because the temperature has reached dangerous conditions in Alexandria and throughout the region. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory, which goes into effect at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17.

The heat advisory will remain in effect from 11 a.m. Wednesday until 8 p.m. The advisory includes the District, communities throughout Maryland, and Northern Virginia.

The temperature will be in the mid-90s, but due to high humidity it will feel closer to 105-110 degrees on Wednesday. The temperature is expected to remain in the 90s and 100s throughout the weekend.

“The combination of high temperatures and high humidity will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible,” notes the advisory. “Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.”

The National Weather Service recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks if you are working outdoor and staying in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone feeling overcome by heat stroke or witnessing someone in trouble should call 911.
