Democracy Federal: This Alexandria-based Credit Union Doubled its Footprint In Four Years

“Over the next five years we’re looking to expand further into Northern Virginia,” said Democracy FCU CEO Ken Calhoun at a ribbon cutting for the bank’s newest branch at 500 C. St. SW near Capitol Hill. “We’re going to take care of the members and the branches that we have right now. It’s about giving our customers the best experience when they walk through our doors. Right now we’re sitting down and having compensated conversations with our clients and talking with them one-on-one about how we can save them money five to ten years down the road.”
Democracy FCU was originally chartered in 1936 as the Social Security Employees Federal Credit Union. The passage of time would also mean a number of identity and name changes for the organization, and it was later changed to the FSA Employees Federal Credit Union in 1946, the HEW Employees Federal Credit Union in 1955 and then HEW Federal Credit Union in 1984. It was named Democracy Federal in 2015.
“We want you to know that our name change to Democracy FCU , as well as this new branch, signals a renewed energy and commitment to you, our loyal members,” Patricia Ellis, chairperson of the bank’s board of directors, said in a statement. “We are proud of the credit union’s heritage of helping people reach maximum financial security and financial freedom.”
The Credit Union operates in five offices:
- Humphrey Branch – Hubert H. Humphrey Building (HHS) – Washington, D.C.
- C Street Branch – Washington, D.C.
- Philadelphia Public Ledger Branch
- Silver Hill Branch – District Heights, MD
- Alexandria Branch – Alexandria, VA
- Executive Offices in Alexandria, which include member services, credit card, lending, accounting and marketing departments
