Tasty: Takoma Park Middle School Wins, Puts Healthy Food On Area School Menus

The school beat out 10 other teams to create a dish that will be part of the school lunch menu next year in Fairfax, Prince William, Arlington, Loudoun and Montgomery Counties.

The results are in and Takoma Park Middle School in Montgomery County, Md., was named the official winner of the Real Food For Kids 7th Annual Culinary Challenge on March 2. The school beat out 10 other teams from middle and high schools throughout the region – and created a dish that will be part of the school lunch menu next year in Fairfax, Prince William, Arlington, Loudoun and Montgomery Counties.

Hayfield Secondary School hosted the competition, which was reportedly attended by more than 500 people. Second place was awarded to Franklin Middle School in Fairfax for their Peruvian chicken with cilantro-lime crema, crunchy kale, sweet potatoes and spiced pears. Third place was awarded to Chantilly Academy in Fairfax for their Peruvian chicken with cilantro lime cream sauce, roasted vegetables and quinoa and roasted pineapple.

The event was judged by celebrity chefs Spike Mendelsohn (from the fifth season of Top Chef), award-winning chef Cathal Armstrong and Bonnie Benwick, deputy food editor of the Washington Post.
