Senior Services of Alexandria’s October 17th Speaker Series:Wellness: Mind, Body and Spirit
By MaryAnne Beatty
ALEXANDRIA,VA- Successful aging is not just about exercising or only eating healthy foods, but combining various dimensions of our daily living to achieve total wellness. This includes the importance of feeling productive, staying socially engaged, as loneliness is a real health risk for older adults, staying physically active and eating a nutritious diet, avoiding excess alcohol and tobacco, and nurturing one’s spirituality, not only through organized religion but perhaps through meditation or even yoga. It is also important to keep one’s brain stimulated through volunteer work, creative classes, or maybe joining a book club.
SSA’s Speaker Series program focuses on several elements of wellness and how easy it is to incorporate them into your daily life. The highlights of the October 17th event will include learning how you can benefit from the new trend toward alternative healing methods; a demonstration of Pilates designed to improve strength, flexibility, and balance; information about the importance of nutrition and steps you can take to support an active lifestyle; and an opportunity to experience one of the most effective exercises for mind and body health, tai chi!
The program will feature speakers from the City’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities; Four Directions Wellness; Studio Body Logic; and Inova Alexandria Hospital.
The program will be held at Beth El Hebrew Congregation, 3820 Seminary Road on Thursday, October 17, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon, with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. This event is free, and includes light refreshments. RSVP online at www.seniorservicesalex.org or call 703-836-4414, ext. 110.
