Call Your Mother is at 1300 King St. in Old Town Alexandria!

All the bagels, sandwiches, and schmears you love are here!

Alexandria, VA  Call Your Mother Deli (CYM) is now open as of Thursday February 22, 2024 in Old Town Alexandria. Owners Chef and wife Daniela Moreira and Chief Doughboi (his self-named official title) Andrew Dana have opened the 13th iteration of this beloved restaurant at 1300 King St. Some back story, CYM had planned to open in a different location. The first turned out to have some real issues with the site so the project was shelved but the seed had been planted. CYM is now in the former home of Pines of Florence.

The location is somewhat subdued from the usual locations which means no screaming pink paint on the exterior as other locations but they sneaked some in on the window frames. However, pink is everywhere in the completely renovated space. The ceilings reach up to the roof and almost floor to ceiling windows bring in lots of bright sunlight.

Dana is a fun lovely guy who takes bagels seriously. After trying bagels all over the US and Canada, he and his team settled on NY-style bagel with a touch of honey sweetener similar to Montreal-style bagels. The result is a bagel to be reckoned with. The bagels include plain, everything, sesame, maple salt & pepper, cinnamon raisin, cheddar, za’atar, and apple cinnamon. New bagel varieties pop up regularly. Another feature that amazed me was the ‘full coverage’ of toppings. For example, you’ll find the bottom of the everything bagel has just as much stuff as on the top! Buy one or a baker’s dozen and feel free to mix up your choices. Schmears and fixin’s include seven different flavors including a vegan cream cheese.

The shop has a coffee roaster on site where 100% arabica coffee beans grown in Brazil are roasted for all of the local CYM stores. Called JoJo coffee, after their daughter, the beans produce an enjoyable medium dark roast cup that goes well with the restaurant offerings. The menu runs the gamut with CYM Signature sandwiches that touch on the classic and the unusual. The Sun City features local bacon, pastrami, or ImpossibleTM sausage, bodega-style egg, American and cheddar cheeses, and spicy honey, on maple salt & pepper bagel.

The Royal Palm harkens back to the familiar with an everything bagel topped with plain cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato, cucumber, red onion, and capers.

How about trying the Mountain View filled with mashed avocado, bodega-style eggs, latke, American and cheddar cheeses on a plain bagel.

Melty things are warm sandwiches with ooey gooey melty cheese that touch on the sublime. Check out the Jetski with brisket, pastrami, American and cheddar cheeses, and jalapeño, melted on a cheddar bagel.

And if you still have room for dessert or just want a ‘Bissel’ sweet with your coffee, check out the Schweets including fresh baked cookies, cinnamon or chocolate babkas, and other seasonal pastries.
