ALEXANDRIA, VA–Founded by fourteen faith communities in 1969, StepALIVE! celebrates its 41st year in action supported by its now 50 interfaith communities this year!

An annual 5k walk-run, StepALIVE! is not a race, but rather an opportunity for the community to come together, raise awareness for hunger, and get some steps in. One month from today, on October 16, individuals and teams of walkers will gather outside First Christian Church (2723 King St).

All ages, even those who are too young to walk, are welcome to participate, strollers and all!

At 2pm, they will begin their stroll down the hill—a safe sidewalk path will be provided, as traffic will not be blocked off—down to Old Town, and back up. (A shuttle will be provided upon return for walkers who need extra help but want to participate.)

The Old Town Crier and Mayor Wilson will kick things off promptly at 2pm, and then the walkers will be led out by a bagpiper to keep the energy alive—pun certainly intended.

Along the walking route, folks will be able to enjoy sites of cars from the Old Town Festival of Speed and Style as well as the sweeping views of the city from upper King St.

ALIVE! is a volunteer run, sponsor-supported organization, which sees over 900 volunteers amongst its events throughout a year. Jenn Ayers, Executive Director, states, “Our philosophy guiding ALIVE! is really that anyone who can serve should and anyone who comes for service should be served. Where all our different faiths agree is serving others.”

StepALIVE! is no different in the need for volunteers and the deliverance of service. Volunteers are needed day-of to work setup, breakdown, parking, passing out t-shirts, and other duties during the day. To register to volunteer, visit https://www.alive-inc.org/stepalive-2022-october-16th/.

T-Shirts are always a highlight of the event.

To ensure all this service comes to fruition, StepALIVE! also needs sponsors. To become a sponsor, click here. There will be three tiers of sponsorship, and each sponsor will be featured on this year’s event t-shirt if they register by October 1.

“T-shirts help us amplify the message by doing something visually,” explains Ayers.

All registrants will also receive a t-shirt. Registration fees are as follows: $25 Individual Walker ($30 at event); $10 Children 6 -13; $10 Seniors 70+; Free Children under 6.

Register your team now!

Following the official walk, a post-walk celebration will be held with food, beverages—for hydration after all those steps—and music.

“This event is welcome to all,” Ayers prompts. There is no participant cap or deadline for participant registration, but the event fills fast and the t-shirts are popular, so sign up your team or yourself today!
