Officials say the two incidents occurred close together in time, though it is not yet known whether the same animal was responsible.

The raccoon or raccoons involved were not captured, but a dead raccoon discovered in the area has been sent for rabies testing, health officials said Wednesday.

Because witnesses described aggressive behavior, the health department is treating the situation with caution and reminding residents that rabies does occur in Northern Virginia wildlife.

Health officials say people in Old Town should avoid approaching raccoons or any wild animals, even if they appear calm or injured.

Wildlife that may be infected with rabies can behave unusually, including:

• Acting aggressively toward people or pets
• Drooling excessively or foaming at the mouth
• Appearing disoriented or walking as if intoxicated
• Showing little fear of humans

Anyone who encounters an animal displaying these behaviors should contact Alexandria Animal Control at 703-746-4444.

What To Do If You Are Bitten

Rabies is a virus transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, most often through bites or scratches.

Health experts stress that immediate wound cleaning is critical.

If bitten:

• Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes
• Report the incident to Alexandria Animal Control
• Seek medical care right away

While rabies is preventable with treatment after exposure, medical experts warn that once symptoms begin, the disease is almost always fatal.

Protecting Pets and Families

The Alexandria Health Department is also reminding residents to ensure that dogs and cats are up to date on rabies vaccinations.

Officials say the best prevention is simple: do not approach wildlife, keep pets supervised outdoors, and report animals acting strangely.

The city says it will provide updates once rabies testing results from the raccoon are available.
