City of Alexandria vs. Commonwealth of Virginia: New Governing Dynamics
Alexandria, VA – The new year brings a new dynamic between the local government of the City of Alexandria and its relationship with Richmond. With the swearing-in of an all-Republican leadership at the state level, it’s no secret that the dynamic of the local Democratic leadership in Alexandria with the Commonwealth is bound to change.
Late last year, the Mayor of Alexandria, Justin Wilson, outlined areas of potential common ground with then Governor-Elect Glenn Youngkin. One area of potential collaboration was the preservation and expansion of Alexandria’s local authority. However, since taking office, we’ve now seen the actual dynamics and disagreements starting to play out regarding policy and executive orders. As the city and state-wide leadership find themselves at odds on certain topics, how will local and state governments work together?
Agenda Alexandria will look into this new dynamic on how the local and state governments will work together, even in the face of policy conflicts that can and will arise. Ultimately, the question stands: how will our community be impacted by the disagreements of our local and state governing bodies for the next four years?
This program will take place at our March 28, 2022, meeting, held at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. We will have a small social reception at 6:30 pm, with the main program starting at 7:00 pm. We will also livestream the program through our social networks, collaborating with the Alexandria City High School Broadcast Club and The Zebra newspaper.
