ALEXANDRIA, VA – Volunteering makes a difference. Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) are recognizing the efforts Virginia youth have made to help in their communities during the pandemic.

Through November 10, students in grades 5 through 12 are invited to apply for the 2021 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. The award includes a $1,000 scholarship, presented to middle and high school students in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Along with the scholarship, winners, called State Honorees, receive an engraved silver medal and are invited to the program’s national recognition events in early May.  Selections will be announced in February.

“We call on parents, educators and local leaders to join us in celebrating the young volunteers who are innovating and adapting to serve their communities, and setting an important example for their peers in the process,” said JoAnn Bartoletti, Executive Director and CEO of NASSP.

In May, the top 10 youth volunteers will be named. Those chosen will receive additional $5,000 scholarships, gold medallions, crystal trophies for their nominating schools or organizations, and $5,000 Prudential grants for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.

Candidates are eligible if they have volunteered in-person or virtually in the past 12 months.  To apply, click HERE.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program was created in 1995. Since its inception, awards have been granted to more than 140,000 middle and high school students across the country at the local, state, and national level.

“We founded The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards to honor young volunteers working to meet the needs of our changing world — a mission that feels especially timely today,” said Charles Lowrey, Chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “As life evolves due to COVID-19, young Americans are continuing to address urgent issues facing their communities, and we celebrate their service in hopes that they’ll inspire others to do the same.”
