Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy Hopes to Raise $45k in One Day
The annual book character walkathon returns in person!
ALEXANDRIA, VA–On Monday, Oct. 31, the Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy held its annual walkathon fundraiser. For approximately a decade, the students have been adorning the attire of their favorite book characters and walking around the outdoor activities field in hopes of raising money for their school.
Dinosaurs and wizards and witches and demagorgons and Dr. Suess characters and ghostbusters abounded.
Principal Dr. Patricia Zissios stated, “We have a DJ helping them with their laps by playing inspirational music to keep them moving. We have a big balloon arch for them to run through. The children all have numbered bibs, and they get to take a group ohto on the front steps. Everyone is just having a good time.”
Parents and businesses are welcome to sponsor a student for a flat fee, or make a pledge-per-lap donation. Taking these pledges to heart, the students raced around the field as fast as they could, showing no signs of slowing, until their period was up.
Each grade level had the chance to run for funds during their 45-minute Encore period. The funds are allocated towards an array of school activities, such as field trips, assemblies, regular programming, filling the book vending machine, and more.
The fundraising goal this year is $45,000. The PTA donation portal is also open year-round.
