What Will Be Open and Closed in Alexandria During Christmas and New Year’s Day?

ALEXANDRIA, VA – City of Alexandria government offices will be closed Friday, December 23, and Monday, December 26, in observance of the Christmas holiday. They will also be closed Monday, January 2, 2023, in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday. Other schedule changes and closings are listed below.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) will be open on Saturday, December 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and closed Sunday, December 25. On New Year’s Eve, AWLA will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and closed on New Year’s Day. Make your appointment here.  The animal emergencies or wildlife concerns hotline, 703.746.4444, operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and will continue to operate normally.

Courts: The General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court and Court Service Unit, will close at 12 p.m., Thursday, December 22, and will remain closed Friday, December 23 through Monday, December 26. The Circuit Court and Clerk of Circuit Court will operate on normal hours on Thursday, December 22, and will be closed Friday, December 23, and Monday, December 26.  All Courts will be closed on Monday, January 2, 2023.

Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV): On Friday, December 23, Saturday, December 24, and Monday, December 26, all DMV Customer Service Centers in Northern Virginia will be closed. They will also be closed on Monday, January 2, 2023.

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department, the Flora Krause Casey Pharmacy, and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria City High School will be closed Friday, December 23, Monday, December 26, and Monday, January 2, 2023.

Historic Alexandria: On Saturday, December 24, Fort Ward Museum will be closed. All other museums will be open for regular hours. On Monday, December 26 and Monday, January 2, 2023, the Freedom House Museum will be open for regular hours. All museums will be closed on Sunday, January 1, 2023. Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and will not be closed during the holiday. This includes the Child Protective Services hotline at 703.746.5800, Domestic Violence hotline at 703.746.4911, Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703.746.3401, Adult Protective Services hotline at 703.746.5778 or 988, and Sexual Assault Hotline at 703.683.7273.

Impound Facility : The City’s Impound Facility for towed vehicles will be closed between Friday, December 23, and Monday, December 26, as well as from Friday, December 30, to Monday, January 2, 2023. The Impound Facility is closed Saturdays and Sundays and on all observed City holidays. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed between Friday, December 23, and Monday, December 26, as well as Sunday, January 1 and Monday, January 2, 2023. Visit Alexandria Library for details.

Parking: Between Friday, December 23, and Monday, December 26, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcing parking restrictions at metered spaces, in residential permit parking districts and in other areas with signed parking time limits. Parking enforcement will also be suspended Sunday, January 1 and Monday, January 2, 2023, in observance of New Year’s Day. Temporary no parking areas will still be enforced. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no-parking zones, loading zones or spaces for persons with disabilities).

Recreation, Nature, and Art Center: On Friday, December 23, Monday, December 26, and Monday, January 2, 2023, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston Recreation, and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All other City of Alexandria recreation and nature centers will be closed.   • Residential refuse and recycling will be collected on the regularly scheduled day during the week of Sunday, December 18. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be closed on Saturday, December 24.
  • Residential refuse and recycling will be delayed by one day during the week of Monday, December 26. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be closed Monday, December 26.
  • Residential refuse and recycling will be delayed by one day during the week of Sunday, January 1, 2023. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be OPEN on Saturday, December 31, and will be CLOSED on Monday, January 2, 2023.
  • Christmas Tree Collection: Christmas tree collection will begin Tuesday, January 3, 2023, and will be collected through the whole month for residents who receive City trash collection services. Schools: All Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed between Thursday, December 19, to Monday, January 2, 2023.

Transit: On Monday, December 26, and Monday, January 2, 2023, fare-free DASH service will observe the Christmas and New Year holidays by operating on a Sunday schedule.  DASH will operate regular service on Sunday, December 25, and Sunday, January 1. The free King Street Trolley operates regular service daily, including holidays, every 15 minutes, from King Street Metro to Alexandria City Hall, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Alexandria Transit Company administrative office will be closed between Friday, December 23, to Monday, December 26, as well as Monday, January 2, 2023.
