Groundbreaking for New Alexandria Hospital Sept. 30

ALEXANDRIA, VA-Inova announced today (Sept. 19) that the groundbreaking for the new Alexandria Hospital is set for Monday, Sept. 30 at 4:30 p.m. The project, 1.1 million square feet, is at the site of the former Landmark Mall.

As The Zebra reported two years ago, the hospital be part of a mixed-use area, amounting to four million square feet. The community space will feature park areas, entertainment offerings, and rerail,” according to a 2023 report that showed design images of the new hospital.

The hospital, which will sit on 52 acres, will employ 2,000 healthcare workers. It will house the latest technology, including a 111,000 square-foot cancer center and an 83,000 square-foot specialty care center. The campus will also be able to treat Level II trauma injuries, providing 24-hour care.

A below-grade garage will have 1,488 parking spaces. Nineteen will have charging capability for electric vehicles.

Four years ago, Mayor Justin Wilson envisoned the hospital campus as a “catalyst for the West End providing significant benefits for Alexandria and the region at a time when focus on our long-term future is critical.”

Inova wants construction completed by 2028.
