ALEXANDRIA, VA – The tower of the 330-foot George Washington Masonic National Memorial bursts bright in burgundy and gold, illuminating the ecstatic pride and hope for its hometown NFL team, the Washington Commanders.

“I am impressed with the enthusiasm!” said Shawn Eyer, Managing Director of Communications and Education at the Memorial.

Fans are exploding with pride about the Saturday night win for Washington over the Detroit Lions, 45-31, as it is the first time they have advanced to the NFC Championship Game since 1991.

Watch parties were happening all over town at local restaurants and bars, including Glory Days, 3141 Duke Street, which has hosted two large playoffs’ viewing celebrations overflowing with local diehard fans including Alexandria Councilman John Chapman and former Mayor Bill Euille.

“Been waiting to celebrate for 19 years…YES, I am going to do THE MOST!!!” said Chapman.

“We did make a policy decision recently, not to light for things like this. We keep it to the major holidays, Masonic things, etc. But it doesn’t hurt to ask,” Eyer responded on a Facebook post asking if the Memorial would light up for the moment of local sports glory.

Over 40 people chimed in with reasons it should get lit, including Alexandria’s former Vice Mayor who commented, “I know! I messaged Shawn Eyer this morning ❤️💛🏈

Tante Peggyb said, “The Empire State Building lights up in blue and orange to celebrate the Knicks. I know the Masonic Temple is not a public office building, but it does offer community commentary and support through its beautiful lights.”

And at around 9:30 p.m., Eyer popped back into the thread, with three words, “We did it!”

Heaps of praise piled in for Eyer, and Lori Hook commented, “The bridge going into Navy Yard was lit up in Burgundy and Gold. Capital Wheel needs to jump on the bandwagon too!”
