Could the 200 Block of King Street Become a Permanent Walk Zone?
Next phase of pilot begins March 14. Community feedback will influence final decision

ALEXANDRIA, VA-Talk of making the 100 block of King Steet a pedestrian zone began before the pandemic. Through that period, the pedestrian zone helped restaurants and businesses because they were able to conduct business outdoors. The Unit and 100 blocks were permanently closed to vehicular traffic in 2021. Last year, City Council approved an extension of the pedestrian zone to the 200 block. A pilot program began in the winter.
The second phase of that pilot begins March 14. An Alexandria eNews bulletin says it will give the city the opportunity “to continue to test the feasibility of this change while gathering valuable community feedback.”
Phase Two will last until Sept.30. Based on its findings, City Council may consider a permanent walk zone ordinance for the area this fall.
