ALEXANDRIA, VA – Today, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (COG) Commuter Connections program honored regional leaders in sustainable commuting at the 28th Annual Employer Recognition Awards, held at the National Press Club. In a year marked by innovation and commitment to greener transportation, five standout organizations received top honors for implementing programs that help reduce single-occupancy vehicle trips and improve regional mobility.

In a highlight of the event, Commuter Connections announced the winners of its first-ever goDMV Commuter Competition — a three-month challenge designed to encourage sustainable commuting. Out of 41 participating employers and over 1,200 commuters, The World Bank Group, American Public Transportation Association, and Loudoun County Government emerged as top competitors, collectively logging more than 36,000 sustainable trips and cutting an impressive 425,000 single-occupancy vehicle miles.

“By making alternative transportation easier, these organizations are improving how our region moves,” said James Walkinshaw, Chair of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board at COG and Fairfax County Supervisor. “Empowering employees to choose different transit options paves the way for cleaner air, less road congestion, and better mobility.”

Also honored for exemplary commuter programs were:

These employers were recognized for promoting telework, public transit, biking, and other commuting options as integral parts of their workplace culture.

Two special recognitions were also awarded:

Daniel Sheehan, Commuter Connections Director, praised the winners of the 2025 Employer Awards and goDMV Commuter Competition for their leadership in advancing sustainable commuting options, adding, “these organizations demonstrate how alternative commuting options can benefit both the workforce and the environment, and we hope their efforts inspire others across the region.”

Each year, Commuter Connections invites nominations from employers across the region who demonstrate a strong commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle miles traveled through innovative and sustainable commute alternatives. Winners are selected by a committee based on measurable impacts and program effectiveness.
