Wendy Albert, Esteemed Restaurateur and West End Business Leader, Dies at 72

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Wendy Albert, a pioneering force in Alexandria’s restaurant and small business communities and co-founder of the beloved Tempo Restaurant, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at the age of 72. She died at home under hospice care, surrounded by her family.
Albert had spent the last several years battling cancer, a fight that her son, Yannick Henri Albert, described as courageous and unrelenting. “She was brave and endlessly spirited,” he wrote in a heartfelt tribute posted to social media. “If you knew my mom, you know just how much of a fighter she was—persistent and obstinate; her battle with cancer was no different.”
A fixture in Alexandria’s West End for decades, Albert was not only a successful restaurateur but also a devoted advocate for the city’s small businesses. She co-founded Tempo Restaurant with her husband, Chef Serge Albert, turning it into a neighborhood institution known for its European-inspired cuisine and warm, elegant atmosphere.

Beyond the restaurant, Albert served as a founding member and former president of the Alexandria West End Business Association. She was named Businesswoman of the Year and was widely recognized as a trailblazer in sustainable business practices. Her influence extended across the DMV, where she championed local entrepreneurs and grassroots organizations with tireless enthusiasm.
At the end of 2022, Wendy and Serge closed Tempo Restaurant after 32 years citing health reasons and a desire to see the world and spend more time with their family.
“Wendy was an icon and legend in Alexandria and the surrounding communities,” her son wrote. “She gave so much and never asked for anything in return.”

Colleagues, friends, and longtime patrons of Tempo remember Albert as a gracious host, a savvy businesswoman, and a generous mentor. Her leadership, kindness, and dedication to community service left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Serge, and their son, Yannick.
Plans for a public memorial have not yet been announced.
