Making Time Matter: The Power of Mentoring and Tutoring in Alexandria

By Courtney Gonzalez, Nonprofit Program Manager
Alexandria, VA – In Alexandria, the impact of one caring adult showing up for one hour a week is transforming young lives every day. Whether through tutoring programs focused on early literacy or long-term mentoring relationships, volunteers are making measurable, meaningful change in our community.
Volunteer Alexandria invites community members to get involved this school year. Visit volunteeralexandria.org/mentoropps to find the right opportunity for you.
Building a Culture of Connection – The Alexandria Mentoring Partnership (AMP) supports over 700 mentor relationships annually, pairing caring adults with young people who benefit from extra guidance, stability, and support. Mentors commit to just one hour a week for one year and often make a lifelong impact. AMP brings together schools, nonprofits, faith groups, and local leaders to create a citywide culture of connection.

Literacy as a Lifeline – Early literacy remains a critical focus for Alexandria, and the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC) has played a central role in tackling this challenge. With more than 300 volunteer tutors engaged through ATC alone, these programs are transforming early literacy and mentoring outcomes for young learners, thanks in part to dedicated volunteers and thoughtful, research-based approaches.
“Volunteers know their time is being put to good use because they can see the impact of their work. Their Book Buddies make amazing progress learning to read!” said Lisa Jacobs, Executive Director of ATC.
And the results speak volumes. Through programs like Book Buddies, students not only gain reading confidence but also build trusting relationships with adults who show up for them week after week.

Did You Know… that mentoring and tutoring can change lives? Students with support are more likely to stay in school, build strong relationships, and meet key academic milestones. But the real impact is personal, like a child reading their first book or opening up to a trusted adult.
