Odd Slice of Life: Just 45 Minutes from Old Town, a 1930s Nudist Club Thrives

At Maryland’s Pine Tree Associates, you can ditch your clothes—just not your manners.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Who knew one of America’s oldest nudist clubs sits less than an hour from Alexandria? Hidden among 96 wooded acres in Crownsville, Maryland, the Pine Tree Associates Nudist Club has been quietly cultivating sunshine, serenity, and self-acceptance since 1934—long before the Capital Beltway or the phrase “body positivity” existed.

Founded by a group of Washington–Baltimore friends seeking a natural escape during the Great Depression, Pine Tree began on the Keyes family farm, just north of Annapolis. Members turned the old farmhouse into a clubhouse, swam in the pond, and celebrated outdoor living decades before “wellness retreats” were a thing.

In 1958, the Keyes family officially transferred ownership to the members, forming Pine Tree Associates, Inc.—a cooperative club managed entirely by those who use it. Nearly a century later, that same community spirit thrives across its leafy acreage beside the Bacon Ridge Natural Area.

A Day in the Bare Woods

Just 45 minutes from Old Town Alexandria, Pine Tree is tucked into a quiet corner of Anne Arundel County—close enough for a day trip but far enough to feel like another world. A small sign marks the entrance, leading to a property filled with trees, trails, and friendly faces.

There’s an outdoor pool, indoor pool, sauna, and hot tub, plus tennis courts, volleyball, hiking paths, and a large clubhouse. On weekends, families and retirees mingle over potlucks and games. It feels less like a secret society and more like summer camp—with fewer tan lines.

“It’s not about shock value,” one longtime member told Bay Weekly. “It’s about feeling free, healthy, and accepted exactly as you are.”

The Rules of Relaxation

Pine Tree operates on a philosophy of comfort and respect—and that includes clear policies for visitors.

Clothing: When the weather allows, clothes are not appropriate. Pine Tree is a nudist, not a “clothing-optional,” club, so members and guests are expected to disrobe in common areas. Towels are required when sitting, and sun protection is encouraged. Hats and normal-length T-shirts are fine for shielding sensitive shoulders, but lingerie or underwear aren’t allowed.

Children and teens may remain clothed in most areas, but not at the pools, where swim diapers and pool rules apply for infants.

Background Checks: To maintain safety and peace of mind, Pine Tree requires background checks for all new visitors and guests of members. Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance, and guests provide basic identification for a one-time screening against criminal and sex-offender registries. Anyone who fails is declined entry—with most of the deposit refunded.

Pets: The club is pet-friendly, offering a fenced dog-exercise area and two pet-friendly cabins. Pets must remain leashed and supervised and are not permitted in sports or pool zones.

It’s an unusual mix of freedom and structure—relaxed but responsible. That balance keeps Pine Tree welcoming and family-friendly after all these decades.

Old Roots, Modern Comforts

Visitors can rent cabins, campsites, or RV hookups, with access to picnic areas and social spaces. It’s still a cooperative model—members maintain the grounds and organize events—so the atmosphere stays homey and personal.

And yes, visitors are welcome. Day passes are available year-round, with guidance for first-timers: bring a towel, sunscreen, and an open mind.

Open All Year—Even in January

Though nudism conjures thoughts of summer, Pine Tree operates 365 days a year. The indoor pool and hot tub stay active through the winter, and the club hosts trivia nights, movie screenings, and holiday dinners.

Many members drive in from D.C., Baltimore, and Northern Virginia—escaping the layers of urban life. “At Pine Tree,” one visitor joked, “the only dress code is sunscreen.”

A Short Drive, A Long Tradition

For Alexandrians, the surprise is proximity: Crownsville is less than 45 miles away—closer than most wineries or beach getaways. Pine Tree’s blend of history, community, and nature makes it one of the region’s most unique escapes.

Nearly a century since its founding, this historic nudist retreat continues to champion a simple but radical idea: comfort, community, and confidence—without the clothes.
