Happy 250th! Alexandria Police Department Honors the 250th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps

Alexandria, VA — The Alexandria Police Department (APD) proudly joined the nationwide observance of the 250th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps today, hosting a ceremonial cake-cutting event to honor Marines past and present, as well as the many veterans who continue their service within APD as sworn officers and professional staff.

Honor, courage, and commitment define the shared values of both Marines and police officers. The annual observance recognizes APD’s deep connection to military service and the continued dedication of its veterans who protect and serve the Alexandria community.

The ceremony took place at 12:00 p.m. at Alexandria Police Headquarters, where members of the department, city officials, and community partners gathered to pay tribute to the Corps’ historic milestone and to all military veterans within APD.

The program included the presentation of colors, the reading of the Commandant’s Birthday Message, and the traditional cake cutting recognizing the oldest and youngest Marines present.

Chief of Police Tarrick McGuire offered remarks following the ceremony, emphasizing the unity of purpose between military and law enforcement service.

“This annual observance is a meaningful reminder of our common purpose—to serve with integrity, dedication, and respect for those who came before us,” said Chief McGuire. “Our veterans embody the same courage and commitment that define the Marine Corps, and we are proud to honor them today.”

The event’s Guest of Honor, Mr. Mike Jadoo, a Marine Corps veteran and community leader, also delivered remarks. Mr. Jadoo serves as a Data Scientist with AFS, and is known for facilitating empathy-based communication programs that foster trust and self-awareness. He remains active in veteran support initiatives, Toys for Tots, and the Ukrainian Humanitarian Supply Drive across Maryland.

As part of the national commemoration, the ceremony echoed the timeless words honoring the spirit of the Marine Corps: “The eternal spirit which has animated our Corps from generation to generation has been the distinguishing mark of Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish, Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future, as they have been in the past. And the men of our nation will regard us as the successors to the long line of industrious men who have served with us.”

First Lt. Malik Moten added perspective on the enduring relevance of that spirit: “The Marine Corps is more than a fighting force — it’s a family bound by honor, integrity, and selfless service. Every Marine, past and present, carries that legacy forward. The 250th anniversary is not only a celebration of history but a recommitment to the values that make Marines who we are.”

As the Marine Corps marks its 250th anniversary, the Alexandria Police Department’s ceremony stands as a reflection of gratitude and unity — celebrating the Marines’ proud heritage and the continuing service of all veterans who strengthen the APD and the community it serves.
