New Penn Daw Development to Expand Fire Services and Supportive Housing
Alexandria, VA – Fairfax County leaders have approved plans for a new Penn Daw Fire Station and a combined emergency and supportive housing facility in the Richmond Highway corridor, moving forward with a long-discussed project designed to improve emergency response and expand services for residents experiencing homelessness.
The project will replace the aging Penn Daw Fire Station, originally built in 1967, with a modern two-story facility featuring expanded space for firefighters and updated emergency equipment. County officials say the new location on Beacon Hill Road will improve response times and provide better access to major roads.

The development will also include a new emergency shelter and 30 supportive housing units for individuals and families, replacing the century-old Eleanor Kennedy Shelter. County leaders said the combined campus is intended to provide safer, more efficient services while helping address homelessness and affordable housing needs in Fairfax County.
Officials highlighted the project as a cost-effective investment that brings public safety and human services together at one site. The plan also includes green building features aimed at improving energy and water efficiency.
