ALEXANDRIA, VA — The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Alexandria and much of the Washington, D.C., region from 2 p.m. today, Thursday, July 9, through 11 p.m. tonight, warning that strong thunderstorms could bring torrential downpours and flash flooding.

The Flood Watch was issued at 4:10 a.m. EDT by the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office.

Forecasters say a tropical air mass over the region will help fuel strong thunderstorms capable of producing very heavy rainfall. Rainfall rates could approach 2 to 3 inches per hour, with even higher rates possible in the heaviest downpours.

The watch includes Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Manassas and Manassas Park, along with Washington, D.C., and portions of Maryland.

According to the National Weather Service, excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying or flood-prone
