Mayor Gaskins Launches Alexandria’s Art in Every Space Initiative

Alexandria, VA – Last month Mayor Alyia Gaskins officially launched the new citywide initiative called Art in Every Space. Predicated on a city resident’s suggestion and developed by visual artist Robin Jordan, the initiative’s task force lead, the pilot program pairs emerging and experienced Alexandria-area artists with local businesses, establishing moveable galleries showcasing diverse, curated artwork in all mediums.
“Alexandria has always been a city that values creativity and community,” says Mayor Gaskins. “Art in Every Space is about making sure that creativity lives not just in galleries, but in the everyday places where our residents work, shop, and gather, while helping our local businesses thrive in the process.” The initiative has expanded to nine Alexandria-area businesses: Port City Brewing, Elaine’s Restaurant, Cameron Cafe, 108 Wine Gallery, Cherry On Top, Vesta Settlements LLC, 1Up MuayThai Academy, and Corcoran McEnearney and AV Actions, the hosts of the two launches.

Born of the City’s ongoing commitment to fostering community-driven efforts and ideas while expanding opportunities for artists and businesses, there are currently more than 30 artists who have submitted portfolios to the task force. Robin Jordan is joined by representatives from the Office of Mayor Gaskins: Christine Macey, Amber Bryson, Mary Ann Burstein, Andrew McCarthy-Clark, Ashley Wood, Catherine Radachi Chumley, and Josh Heit, president of the Alexandria Arts Alliance.
The pilot program has sparked interest around the DMV with Fairfax kickstarting their own ArtsFairfax Presents initiative. Communities are recognizing the value added by engaging local artists. Art activates community connections in everyday spaces. Art advocacy celebrates the creative and collaborative identity of Alexandria and the arts community all around the DMV.

Robin Jordan explains it eloquently, “Collaborating with our incredibly talented local artists, partnering with Alexandria’s wonderful small businesses and connecting with residents across our community has reminded me just how vibrant and special this city truly is. Art belongs in every space— and Alexandria is proving it, one wall at a time.”
