47 Years of Alexandria: Todd Healy Unveils His 2027 Calendar at Gadsby’s, November 7

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Some Alexandria traditions are measured in seasons. Todd Healy’s calendar is measured in decades.

This year marks the 47th edition of the artist’s annual calendar, a keepsake that has helped generations of Old Town admirers carry a little of Alexandria’s character into the new year. Healy will introduce his 2027 calendar at a holiday pop-up Saturday, November 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Gadsby’s Tavern Restaurant, 138 N. Royal Street.

“Can you believe this is the 47th year????” Healy asked in his invitation to friends and customers. It is a milestone worth celebrating for an artist whose work has long been associated with the streets, buildings, and distinctive character of Old Town.

More Than a Calendar

The pop-up promises more than the first opportunity to pick up the new calendar. Healy will also bring boxes of his nine Christmas cards of Old Town scenes, gift bags and tags, framed giclée prints, maps and historical bird’s-eye views—items that make particularly Alexandria-flavored gifts.

Gallery Lafayette will also accept photographs, graduation certificates, unframed artwork and other keepsakes for custom framing. Customers with completed framing orders to pick up are asked to do so by 1 p.m., one hour before the pop-up closes.

Can’t attend on Saturday? After the November 7 debut, the 2027 calendar will also be available at two Old Town stores: Boxwood, 1205 King Street, and Made in ALX, 415 King Street. Both are convenient stops for local holiday shopping.

Healy’s Art

For Todd Healy, Alexandria has never been simply a collection of handsome old buildings. It has been his muse since he arrived in the area in 1976, and for nearly half a century he has devoted his artistic talents to preserving the city’s architectural personality, one painstakingly rendered brick, window, doorway and rooftop at a time.

“I’m an essence guy, and I have a great appreciation for the essence of this city and this area,” Healy told The Zebra in a 2019 interview. “I’m all about preserving the history of Alexandria in my own way.”

That devotion extends far beyond his beloved calendars. From his longtime Gallery Lafayette studio on South Royal Street, Healy created intricate watercolors and illustrations of Old Town landmarks, restored historic bird’s-eye views of American cities, and built a reputation as a master framer. His work even caught the attention of celebrated journalist Cokie Roberts, who selected his artwork for the cover of her bestselling book Capital Dames.

Former Alexandria Mayor Allison Silberberg praised his extraordinary eye and the personal connection he developed with generations of customers. “He is gifted as an artisan,” she told The Zebra in 2019, adding that he takes his craft to another level.

And perhaps that explains why his calendar has endured for 47 editions. For longtime Alexandrians, turning the page each month is more than keeping track of appointments. It is a small celebration of the city they call home—and of the artist who has spent a lifetime making sure its character is remembered.
