Alexandria Car and Business Tax Bills Due Oct. 5
The vehicle-tax rate remains $5.33 per $100; penalties begin after the October deadline.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria has mailed its 2026 personal property tax bills to registered vehicle owners and businesses, with both due Monday, Oct. 5.
The vehicle personal-property tax rate remains unchanged at $5.33 per $100 of assessed value, according to the City’s Finance Department announcement.
Car-Tax Relief Continues
Qualifying personal-use vehicles assessed at $5,000 or less receive 100% state car-tax relief. The City mails bills showing a zero balance so vehicle owners can see the relief applied to their accounts. Those informational bills do not need to be returned.
Vehicle owners who have not received a bill should contact the Treasury Division at [email protected] or 703-746-4800, Option 2, before the deadline.
The City also mailed business personal-property tax bills to businesses operating in Alexandria as of Jan. 1. Businesses that do not receive a bill by Sept. 1 should contact Business Tax at [email protected] or 703-746-4800.
Businesses that moved, closed or received a statutory assessment may need to file an updated return or other form through the City’s Business Tax office.
Payment Options and Penalties
Taxpayers may pay online by eCheck without a fee or by credit card for a fee through the City’s payment portal. Checks and money orders may also be placed in the 24-hour drop box at 100 N. Pitt St. by midnight Oct. 5.
In-person payments are accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the West End Finance Office, 4850 Mark Center Drive, Suite 2011. City Hall’s tax offices remain closed to walk-in customers during the building’s renovation.
A late-payment penalty of 10% of the tax, or $10 when greater, applies after Oct. 5. An additional 15% penalty raises the total to 25% after Nov. 4. Interest begins accruing Oct. 6. The vehicle-tax rate remains $5.33 per $100; penalties begin after the October deadline.
