Hot Wings, Hecklers and a Recovery Beer: Alexandria’s Scoville Showdown Returns
Two competitions, escalating sauces, willing hecklers and a recovery beer await Alexandria’s bravest wing eaters Saturday.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — Some people spend Saturday evening relaxing. Others volunteer to discover exactly how much heat their taste buds can survive.
Port City Brewing Company, La Tingeria and Bradshaw Sauce Co. are teaming up for the Scoville Showdown: A Hot Wings Challenge from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Port City, 3950 Wheeler Ave.
The evening offers two very different paths to wing-eating glory.
The Mild Master Competition begins at 6:30 p.m. and rewards quantity: contestants race to eat as many wings as possible within the allotted time. Participants should arrive by 6 p.m.
The Heat Master Competition starts at approximately 7:15 p.m. Instead of speed alone, competitors face sauces that become progressively hotter. Those entrants should arrive by 6:30 p.m.
Registration costs $26.50 and includes what Port City calls a “recovery beer.” The official registration page remained active Thursday morning, but Port City warns that only very limited walk-up space will be available.
All competitors must read and sign the participation waiver. They may bring a signed copy or complete it during check-in.
The evening is not restricted to people willing to put their taste buds on the line.
“Audience members and hecklers are definitely welcome!” Port City says in the official event description.
La Tingeria will offer wings on special, while Alexandria-based Bradshaw Sauce Co. plans to have its sauces available for sampling and purchase. The registration page does not list a separate spectator charge.
Saturday can become a full day at the brewery. Before the hot-wing challenge, Port City hosts a Fall Makers Market with Made in ALX from noon to 5 p.m., with more than 20 vendors, food, beer, music and prizes.
For the contestants, the goal is a title. For everyone else, it is dinner, a show and the rare social occasion where heckling has been formally encouraged.
