What Alexandria Council Will Hear Saturday: Small Lots, School Lights and New Townhouses
Final docket includes citywide lot rules, school athletic-field lighting, five North Patrick Street townhouses and a night-illumination ordinance.

ALEXANDRIA, VA-How small is too small for a residential lot—and how bright is too bright for a school athletic field?
Those are among the questions Alexandria City Council will take up during a packed public hearing beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center, 4850 Mark Center Drive.
The City’s final docket includes proposed citywide regulations for developing and redeveloping substandard residential lots. The changes would amend the Alexandria Master Plan and two sections of the zoning ordinance. The Planning Commission recommended approval unanimously.
Council will also consider plans for new athletic facilities at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School, 1000 St. Stephens Road. The proposal includes pole lighting more than 30 feet high. The Planning Commission voted 7-0 to recommend approval.
Another item would allow five townhouses at 724, 726 and 728 N. Patrick St. Other hearings concern a two-unit dwelling on a developed substandard lot at 501 E. Howell Ave.; a lot without street frontage at 108 and 110 N. Quaker Lane; and a request to vacate public right-of-way near Ramsey Street and East Alexandria Avenue.
Council is also scheduled to vote on a City Code change governing nighttime illumination at commercial and residential properties, plus an appeal of the City Manager’s decision to renumber 3600 and 3600½ Russell Road.
The meeting can be watched on government channel 70, the City webcast or Zoom. Residents who want to speak remotely must register for the webinar and submit a speaker form. Written comments may be emailed to [email protected].
The City calendar lists the meeting through 4 p.m., although the ending time is approximate.
