More than 3,500 people came last year. Saturday, Alexandria turns Patrick Henry Recreation Center into a giant hands-on science lab again.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Halloween costumes are encouraged Saturday in Alexandria, but lab coats may be even more useful.

The 11th annual Spooky Mad Science Expo runs from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Patrick Henry Recreation Center, 4653 Taney Ave. The event is free and open to the public.

The Zebra first previewed the Expo in August, when Alexandria proclaimed Oct. 17 “Spooky Mad Science Expo Day.” Organizers told The Zebra that last year’s event drew more than 3,500 people and featured more than 100 interactive experiences. Read that earlier Zebra story here.

This year’s program again mixes Halloween energy with science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Families can move from hands-on experiments to demonstrations and meet people who work in STEM fields. STEAM-inspired costumes are welcome.

Chrysalis Development Group created the Expo to make science feel approachable and exciting, especially for young people who may not otherwise have direct access to scientists, engineers and health professionals.
