City of Alexandria to Open Additional Polling Places for Absentee Voting

ALEXANDRIA, VA – To ensure that all residents have the opportunity to cast a ballot in the upcoming general election, the City of Alexandria will open additional polling places. Alexandrians will be able to vote absentee between Oct. 23 and Oct.31.

The three locations are: Charles Beatley Library, Minnie Howard School, and George Washington Middle School. The last day to vote absentee is Saturday, Oct. 31.

Beatley Library, 5005 Duke St.

  • Friday, October 23, Noon-6 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 24, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Monday, October 26, Noon-8 p.m.
  • Tuesday, October 27, Noon-8 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 28, Noon-8 p.m.
  • Thursday, October 29, Noon-8 p.m.
  • Friday, October 30, Noon-6 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 31, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Minnie Howard School, 3801 W. Braddock Road

  • Saturday, October 24, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 31, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

George Washington Middle School, 1005 Mt. Vernon Ave.

  • Saturday, October 24, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 31, 8 a.m.-5 p.m

The Office of Voter Registration & Elections, located at 132 N. Royal St., Ste. 100, is also open for in-person absentee voting. Office hours are currently Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional hours will start Oct. 23. For dates and times, see below:

  • Monday, October 26, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Tuesday, October 27, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

  • Thursday, October 29, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Friday, October 30, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 31, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

COVID-19 Precautions

All in-person voting locations will implement health safety guidelines from the Virginia Department of Health and CDC. Election officials will be trained in safety practices, hand sanitizer will be available, plexiglass shields will be installed, and the number people allowed inside at one time will be limited.

The Alexandria Medical Reserve Corps will be on hand at polling locations, both inside and outside, to ensure proper distancing and encourage mask use.  People who are sick during these dates are advised to stay home and vote by mail.

Voting by Mail

The last day to apply for a mail-in ballot is Oct. 23. Applications must be received by Voter Registration on that day no later than 5 p.m. To apply for a ballot online, click HERE. To request a paper application, contact Voter Registration at 703-746-4050 or visit  alexandriava.gov/Elections. Completed ballots must be either returned in-person by Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. or have a Nov. 3 postmark and be received by Voter Registration on Nov. 6 at noon.

Voters will have access to ballot drop boxes on the above listed dates and times at all locations. The boxes will also be available on Nov. 3 at all polling places from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. There is a secure drop box at Voter Registration that is available 24 hours a day and monitored by surveillance cameras.

Curbside Voting and Other Accommodations

Certain residents can vote curbside now through Nov. 3. at each absentee voting location. The option will also be available on Nov. 3 at polling places. It is specifically for those who are 65 or older, have a physical disability, or COVID-19 symptoms.
