A Park in a Parking Lot: Alexandria Businesses Encouraged To Apply by Sept. 2 for PARK(ing) Day
ALEXANDRIA, VA – Heard of PARK(ing) Day? The whole idea started in San Fransisco in 2005. On Sept. 16, parking spaces around Alexandria will be turned into temporary parklets. The city is now accepting permit applications for businesses (including nonprofits) and others who wish to participate.
According to an Alexandria eNews Bulletin, PARK(ing) Day is a worldwide event taking place every year for the purpose of reclaiming parking spaces by temporarily transforming them into exciting, imaginative park spaces or parklets. Local businesses, nonprofits and City departments typically design parklets, and then let the public imagine other uses for that space.”
That day, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the public is welcome to explore the spaces and learn more about the businesses and city agencies sponsoring them.
Participants already announced include Bugsy’s Pizza and GQ Alex.
Those interested in participating are asked to submit their application no later than 5 p.m. on Sept. 2. The application includes a parklet proposal that complies with city guidelines. And good news, the permit fee has been waved this year.
Keep in mind with the event happening rain or shine, some businesses may choose not to contruct a parklet if there is inclement weather in the forecast.
