ALEXANDRIA, VA – A new group founded this past October, Alexandria Women for Good (AWG), began the new year by donating $6,720 to Community Lodgings. For three decades, the Alexandria nonprofit Community Lodgings has helped local families who are homeless or low-income find transitional or affordable housing.  AWG is an online-based giving circle made possible through the website grapevine.org.

The group, comprised solely of women who live in Alexandria, has a mission to donate on a regular basis to this community’s nonprofits. Doing so four times a  year, AWG knows it can make a difference.

On. Jan. 26, a few members visited a Community Lodgings learning center, meeting some of the staff and children there, and then presenting the check.

Laura Turner, who was present that day, told The Zebra the 162-member group makes it their goal to raise $8,000 every quarter. She sees donating as an avenue for members “to come together […] to not only network and develop strong individual relationships in our community; [we also have] an opportunity to educate the group about local nonprofits.”

The practice, she added, “allows us to make a more substantial donation to one local nonprofit than if we were donating individually.”

AWG selected Community Lodgings through a nomination process. The process follows this order: Six nonprofits are nominated. That number is narrowed to three. Next, the person who makes the nomination or one of the nonprofit’s reps speaks at a meeting to discuss why that organization is important and how it impacts the community. Finally, there is a group vote where it is decided that all money raised during a quarter goes to the chosen nonprofit.
