It’s Spring and Farmer’s Markets are Busting Out All Over
Alexandria, VA – Farmers Markets are in full swing this time of year. Alexandria is host to several all around the city. The Old Town Farmers Market in front of Alexandria’s City Hall at 301 King St. is the oldest continuously operating market at the same site in the US. The Market is open every Saturday, rain or shine from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm. This is not a producers-only market so there is a wide variety of vendors offering fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, cheeses, breads, pastries, fresh pasta, pickled vegetables, cut flowers, potted plants, soaps, jewelry, and art. FYI, George Washington sent his produce from Mount Vernon to be sold at the Market. The Del Ray Farmers Market at 203 E. Oxford Ave. is a year-round market, open from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm every Saturday morning. During peak season, farmers and vendors offer fruits and vegetables, hard cider, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheeses, breads, fresh pasta, baked goods and cut flowers. The Market offers a free children’s program on the third Saturday of the month open to children ages 4-12. The Power of Produce (POP) Kids’ Club helps connect children with local farmers to educate them about nutrition, food, farming, and community. They also host a Composting Resource Recovery Station.
Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market at 4109 Mt. Vernon Ave. is open every Sunday from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. 4MR Market serves Alexandria and Arlington, and, as a producer- only market, offers fresh vegetables and fruit, homemade baked goods, and locally made food, crafts, and clothing. The Market features a shaded lounge where shoppers can enjoy live music from local musicians. One of the Market’s goals is to bring fresh, nutritious food to people of all income levels, provide an opportunity for local artisans and producers of goods to bring their wares to market, strive to reflect the diversity of the community, and improve the quality of life for Arlandria residents and visitors. It is part of an overall vision to expand and improve Four Mile Run Park and the surrounding neighborhood. The Market also features the Four Mile Run Market Sunday Morning Stretch with yoga instructor Julia P. Valentine (RYT-200). Wake up gently with an hour of stretching on the floor (or in a chair if you prefer) while enjoying the benefits of gentle yoga without needing to know any yoga words or names of poses. They also host a Composting Resource Recovery Station. The West End Farmers Market at 4800 Ben Brenman Park Dr. is open from late spring to late fall. The market is held on Sundays from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm and features farmers, bakers, cooks, crafters, and artisans offering a variety of goods. Some of the vendors include items including flowers and plants, fresh orange juice and lemonade, Greek, German, American, and Uzbekistani breads, cupcakes, cookies, and tarts, olive oil, Cajun rubs, BBQ sauce, chocolate bars, jewelry, candles, soaps, stationary, painted glassware, and woodworking. The Popped Republic and Rocklands BBQ trucks provide freshly prepared food to stave off your hunger pangs. They also host a Composting Resource Recovery Station.
The Old Town North Farmer’s Market can be found at the Montgomery Park parking lot at 901 North Royal St. The Sunday Market is open year-round 10:00 am-2:00 pm. The Thursday Market hours 3:00-7:00 pm Thursdays, 3-7 pm and Sundays 10 am- 2 pm, year-round. The Old Town North Farmers’ Market is committed to supporting local family farms. This dog friendly Market is host to a wide variety of vendors offering fresh produce, baked goods, gift items , easy take home meals and much more. Throughout the year the Old Town North Market accepts donations of healthy, nonperishable food for the Food Pantries of ALIVE, the Lazarus Ministry and the Alexandria Animal Welfare. They also host a Composting Resource Recovery Station. One of the smaller markets is the Farmers Market at Southern Towers located at 5021 Seminary Rd. It is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. Formally known as the Southern Towers Farmers’ Market, the market offers a variety fresh produce from local farmers, hot foods, fresh meats, bakery items, and craft products. The market has an expanded variety of food options. In addition to fresh produce from local farmers, there are hot foods, fresh meats, bakery items and uniquely crafted products to enhance the farmers market experience. The SNAP/EBT program, with the Double Dollar incentive.
McCutcheon/Mount Vernon Farmers Market is open from Wednesdays, April 17-December 18,
8 am-noon at 2501 Sherwood Hall Ln. This producers-only market features fresh produce, home-baked goods, honey straight from the hive, seafood, fresh cut flowers, dairy products, and pasture-raised meat. The Fairlington Farmers Market is located at 3308 S. Stafford St. at the Fairlington Community Center and is open every Sunday from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm, opening May 5 and running to the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Producers-only vendors sell fresh produce, grass fed meats, eggs, coffee, pastries and baked goods, hot breakfast sandwiches, and prepared foods. The market requests that you leave your furry companions snuggled up at home, or be prepared to secure your pet at least 20 feet from the market boundaries.
