Grand Marshal Susanna Sullivan also Women's Champion!
ALEXANDRIA, VA – Rains swept into Alexandria early on Thanksgiving morning, November 28, 2024, but did not diminish the ear to ear smiles and happiness abounding on Mount Vernon Avenue for the Mid-Atlantic area’s Premier Thanksgiving Day race.
The pet-friendly event welcomed over 4,000 rain-soaked participants of all abilities, traveling along five beautiful, flat, and fast miles through the charming heart of Del Ray at varying paces.
But some were faster than others of course. Willy Fink from Gaithersburg, MD finished in a little over twenty minutes, with a time of 23.01.
Susanna Sullivan, who was also the parade’s Grand Marshal, did not disappoint and crossed the finish line first for the women with a time of 25.59. Susanna Sullivan, who was recently named “America’s fastest teacher” by Runner’s World, is a sixth grade math teacher in Falls Church and five-time Turkey Trot winner (setting a course record three times). She’s also a world-class runner, finishing seventh in the Chicago Marathon this year (she was also the fastest American runner) and 10th in the London Marathon in 2023.
“As Grand Marshal, Sullivan’s presence at the Alexandria Turkey Trot highlights the race’s deep ties to the community and its celebration of extraordinary local talent,” said Alexandria Turkey Trot race director Brian Danza of DC Road Runners. “Her journey inspires runners of all levels, and her dual role as an educator and elite athlete embodies the spirit of commitment and excellence.”
Alexandria’s Turkey Trot is also an important fundraiser. This year the organization presented a $10,000 check to ALIVE!. ALIVE! provides support to Alexandrians struggling with food insecurity and economic disparity. Each month, it helps roughly 20,000 Alexandrians secure essential food, respond to financial emergencies, and meet other basic needs such as housing and furniture.
