ALEXANDRIA, VA – George Washington didn’t just lead a nation — he helped unite one. And now, Alexandria students have a chance to explore that legacy, share their voice, and be rewarded for it.

Students in 7th and 8th grade at any Alexandria public or private school are invited to enter the 2026 George Washington Essay Contest, held in honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. This year’s powerful theme is:

Washington’s Role in Uniting the Colonies: America at 250

This is more than an essay contest — it’s a chance to stand in the spotlight of Alexandria history.

Two winners will be selected — one middle school student and one high school student — and each will receive a $500 cash prize.

But the recognition doesn’t stop there.

Winners will be honored by the City of Alexandria and will take part in two of the city’s most beloved traditions:

  • Riding prominently in the Washington’s Birthday Parade on Saturday, February 14, 2026

  • Being recognized at the Friendship Firehouse Annual Breakfast on Monday, February 16, 2026

This is a rare opportunity for students to have their ideas heard, celebrated, and remembered — in the very city George Washington called home.

Essays must be submitted by January 15, 2026, and must follow the official submission guidelines for the student’s grade level.

Details and rules are in the links below.

History is calling. Alexandria students — this is your moment.
