ALEXANDRIA, VA – The City of Alexandria’s Division of Aging and Adult Services is recognizing Older Americans Month (OAM) this May, joining a nationwide celebration led by the Administration for Community Living. Established in 1963, Older Americans Month honors the contributions of older adults, highlights key aging trends, and reinforces a shared commitment to supporting older residents in our communities.

This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” emphasizes prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as essential components of healthy aging. The initiative encourages older adults to take an active role in their well-being by advocating for their needs, accessing preventive care, and making informed lifestyle choices that support independence.

Promoting Healthy Aging for All

Older Americans Month is a reminder that people of all ages can take steps to improve their health. Staying current on preventive screenings, choosing nutritious foods, maintaining regular physical activity, and practicing habits that support mental well-being all contribute to a healthier, more active life.

Residents are encouraged to make a personal commitment to stay healthy, engaged, and connected throughout the year.
