Author Jeffrey Bennett to Discuss Hidden Stories of Black Virginia at Free Alexandria Book Signing

ALEXANDRIA, VA – History lovers will have an opportunity to discover stories often left out of traditional history books when author Jeffrey Bennett visits Alexandria on Saturday, June 6, for a free book signing and discussion of his latest work, The Black Belt of Virginia.
The event begins at 11 a.m. and is free to attend, although advance reservations are recommended.
In The Black Belt of Virginia, Bennett explores the often-overlooked contributions, struggles, and resilience of Black Virginians. The book highlights the stories of more than 80 Black politicians who served across Virginia between 1865 and 1877, a courageous Black woman who reportedly spied on Confederate President Jefferson Davis while disguised as an enslaved worker, and more than 70 historic Black communities that have disappeared over time.
The book also examines the history of a 135-year-old church, the significance of land passed down through generations, and the enduring impact Black families had on Virginia before and after emancipation.
Designed for history enthusiasts and older readers, the collection brings forgotten voices and untold stories back into the public conversation.
