Four Honored with Alexandria Juneteenth Community Service Awards for Community Service
Alexandria, VA – Four Alexandrians whose decades of volunteer service have strengthened neighborhoods, mentored young people, and enriched community life were honored with the City’s 2026 Juneteenth Community Service Award during this year’s Juneteenth celebration.
The 2026 recipients are former Alexandria Vice Mayor Bill Cleveland, Gwen Day-Fuller, Anthony Suggs, and Aaron Banks. Each was recognized by the City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities for a lifetime of service and a lasting commitment to improving the lives of Alexandria residents.
“Getting recognized in the community you grew up in is a very special moment,” said award recipient Gwen Day-Fuller. “Thank you to the City of Alexandria and to all who made this happen.”
Recipients must be at least 60 years old, have deep roots in the Alexandria community, and demonstrate at least 10 years of volunteer service benefiting local families and youth while enhancing the quality of life throughout the city. Nominees also submit biographies documenting their community service and accomplishments.
The award program began two years ago when Calvin Simpson, regional program manager for sports at Charles Houston Recreation Center, joined Recreation Leader III Jesse Bonds and Recreation Leader II Anthony Suggs in proposing a way to recognize Alexandria’s senior community leaders during Juneteenth celebrations.
The 2026 ceremony marked the first year the City of Alexandria officially sponsored the awards, underscoring the importance of recognizing residents whose dedication has made Alexandria a stronger community for generations.
