Alexandria Will Mark 25 Years Since 9/11 With Public Remembrance at Police Headquarters
The city’s 25th annual ceremony will honor victims, survivors and first responders at Police Headquarters.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria will mark 25 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a public remembrance ceremony Friday morning at Police Headquarters.
The City’s 25th annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Sept. 11 at 3600 Wheeler Ave., in the first-floor Community Room, Room 106.
The ceremony will honor the victims, survivors and first responders, along with everyone affected by the attacks. It will also recognize those who risked or gave their lives while responding.
Presentation of Colors and Return to Quarters
The program will include a presentation of colors, remarks by Mayor Alyia Gaskins and Alexandria public-safety officials, and a return-to-quarters ceremony.
The return-to-quarters tradition reflects the signal once used to tell firefighters that an emergency had ended and they could return to their stations. It is often incorporated into memorial observances to mark a final call and return home.
The Zebra has documented Alexandria’s remembrance over the years, including the 2023 ceremony at Market Square. A separate liturgy of remembrance is also planned in Alexandria on Sept. 11.

The City ceremony is free and open to the public. If weather requires a change, the event will be held inside Alexandria Police Headquarters.
