Hundreds of Del Ray Sewer Lines Need Work—Residents Can Ask Questions Tuesday

Alexandria residents can get a closer look Tuesday at a major sewer-rehabilitation project affecting Del Ray East, where City inspections identified hundreds of pipes, manholes and service laterals needing work.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—The City of Alexandria will hold a pre-construction open house for the Del Ray East Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation Project on Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 6 to 7:45 p.m. in the auditorium at Mount Vernon Community School, 2601 Commonwealth Ave.

City staff will be available to answer questions about the construction schedule, the work residents may see near their homes and businesses, and what to expect as the project moves ahead.

What the City Found

According to the City’s official project page, inspectors reviewed 644 pipes covering 21 miles of sanitary sewer, 580 manholes and 2,611 laterals.

The review found that 150 pipes, 111 manholes and 491 laterals require rehabilitation. The work is part of Alexandria’s larger Sanitary Sewer Asset Renewal Program, which is designed to reduce groundwater and stormwater entering the sanitary system through cracks, failed joints and other weaknesses.

Those leaks can add strain to the system and contribute to sewer overflows or backups. The Del Ray East project is the first of three phases serving portions of Rosemont, Del Ray, North Potomac Yard, Arlandria and North Ridge.

What Residents Should Ask

The City says lateral-renewal construction is scheduled to continue through May 2027. Residents near work areas should ask when their block is expected to be affected, whether temporary parking restrictions or water-use interruptions are planned, and how advance notifications will be delivered.

The City’s project page says nearby residents and businesses will receive notices on a rolling basis before construction. Temporary “No Parking” signs may also be posted before work begins.
