ALEXANDRIA, VA — Most Halloween candy runs don’t include a chance to say hello to George and Martha Washington. This one does.

For Alexandria-area families looking to give their costumes an outing beyond the neighborhood, George Washington’s Mount Vernon will host trick-or-treating on Saturday, Oct. 31, with candy collecting, a costume parade and entertainment inspired by the 18th century.

According to Mount Vernon’s announcement, children can meet interpreters portraying General and Lady Washington and watch an 18th-century magician. There’s also a straw bale photo station in front of the Mansion—a chance to capture those carefully assembled costumes before the evening’s adventures begin.

The event runs from 2 to 5 p.m. The costume parade begins at 3:30 p.m. in the upper garden. Children must have a trick-or-treating ticket and use Mount Vernon’s special treat bag to collect candy.

Dinner before the next candy stop

Mount Vernon’s email also offers a practical incentive for parents: dinner after the festivities. From 5 to 8 p.m., children ages 12 and younger can receive a free kids’ menu meal at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant with each adult entrée purchased. The offer is for dine-in service only.

That means families can make an afternoon and dinner of the visit—or fuel up before heading home for another round of Halloween fun.
