Three Alexandria Students Win Entrepreneurship Award
Opioid Overdose Prevention System wins top prize in Conrad Challenge
ALEXANDRIA, VA -Three rising seniors at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (T.J.) recently won top prize at the Conrad Challenge. Named after Pete Conrad, the late astronaut and entrepreneur, the competition is internationally recognized for challenging young scholars.
The T.J. team – consisting of Umang Jain, Vyomika Gandhi, and Justin Choi – presented an original invention called the Opioid Overdose Prevention System. It is a tablet application that helps prevent overdoses fry monitoring a patient’s health when he or she takes the drug as prescribed. The tablet is connected to both a pill dispenser and wrist band. The video illustrates that the students covered all areas of overdose prevention from allowing physicians to access data securely to giving the patient a way to call for help in an emergency.
These three T.J. students put their minds together and created an invention that will help solve a crisis. For all its technological ingenuity, their invention will save lives. And for that alone, they deserve much more than the great award they received.
