ALEXANDRIA, VA – For many decades Sears has been a fixture of Landmark Mall. When the mall closed in 2017 for eventual redevelopment and stores closed inside one by one, somehow Sears remained. But on June 2, word broke that the last store at a once-vibrant shopping venue, is shuttering its entrances.

Transformco, the owner of Sears and Kmart, declined to comment for this story.

This weekend, the store will begin to offer deep discounts, as much as 70 percent off. Temp positions are open for people who want to work as cashiers. Find job listings HERE.

As a result of the pandemic,  The Howard Hughes Corp., which owns the mall, has paused redevelopment of the 51-acre space.

Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson, in his April newsletter to residents, mentioned discussions with The Howard Hughes Corp. They concern, as he wrote, “a public/private partnership that will help spur redevelopment, but as Howard Hughes continues with a restructuring, it remains to be seen who will ultimately bring Landmark through redevelopment.”

Nearly a year ago, the vacant mall served as a movie set for “Wonder Woman 1984.” It is featured in the movie’s trailer.  The film’s expected release date is October 2, 2020.
